At a glance

The states leading the prenup-readiness index

The composite score blends four signals to show where couples appear most prepared for the financial consequences of divorce.

What stands out

A readiness gap from coast to coast

1

Nevada sets the pace

Its illustrative score of 78.4 is 31.1 points above the national average.

2

Large coastal states dominate

California, Florida and New York all place in the top four, supported by strong modeled prenup interest.

3

The lowest scores come with a caveat

Several lower-ranking states use smaller mock survey samples, so the prototype flags them as low confidence.

Methodology

How the index was calculated

Each state receives a score from 0 to 100 across four factors. Raw values are rescaled so the highest state in each metric receives 100 and the lowest receives 0.

40%Have a prenup
30%Want one, do not have one
15%Chance of divorce
15%Money at stake
1

Have a prenup

The share of married or engaged people who report already having a prenuptial agreement.

2

Want one, do not have one

The share who say they would want a prenup but have not arranged one.

3

Chance of divorce

How often marriages in each state end in divorce, modeled from administrative records.

4

Money at stake

Median household income is used as a proxy for the finances a typical household may need to protect.

Important: This page is a visual prototype. The survey size, margin-of-error figures, government inputs, weighting and all rankings are illustrative. A production study requires a properly fielded survey, verified CDC and Census data, and a validated weighting approach.
